50,000 kg BRIO scaffolding to repair the bridge over the Esera River

Sep 04, 2024
A cantilevered solution has been used for the restoration of the bridge, located in Huesca, so as not to interfere with vehicular traffic at any time.

The bridge over the River Esera, on the N-123A road, is a large structure with a vault-shaped span. The bridge deck is made up of reinforced concrete elements, specifically a 41-meter-long reinforced slab over 3 arches with 8 x 3 pier walls in each spandrel. The arches have a square cross-section and the walls have a rectangular cross-section. The abutments are made up of a front wall and the side walls of reinforced concrete, partially clad in masonry.

In order to carry out the repair work on the three arches of the bridge, as well as the bridge abutments, the BRIO scaffolding has been used due to its great versatility and its capacity to adapt to the needs of the job site.

One of the difficulties of this restoration project has been the need to allow vehicular traffic at all times, both during the restoration work and during the process of assembling and dismantling the scaffolding. For this reason, the scaffolding has been assembled by lowering the scaffolding from one of the lanes of the road. This has allowed for alternate traffic.

For this purpose, assembly began in the area of the abutment and the scaffolding was lowered until it reached the base of the first abutment. Once at the base, the cantilevered scaffolding was assembled towards the centre of the bridge. In the areas where the bridge has a gap between the arch and the deck, the arch itself has been used to support the scaffolding with adjustable swivel bases and beams; while the external feet have been anchored to the deck. However, in the central area of the arch, as there is no height between the arch and the deck, the scaffolding is completely suspended and anchored to the deck.

The work in the abutment area has been carried out using suspended scaffolding with unloading ties.

This project video perfectly illustrates the scaffolding solution offered to repair the Esera bridge. Don't miss it!
