Repairs to the longest viaduct in Lisbon

Dec 10, 2024
The Duarte Pacheco Viaduct is one of the main access roads to the city of Lisbon, and an outstanding example of 20th century architecture in Portugal. Measuring 355 m in length, it is composed of five main parts: two 40 m lateral arches, one over the railway line and the other over Avenue of the Monsanto Forest Park, two 85.80 m viaducts and a 92 m central arch over Avenue of Ceuta.

The work focused on three areas: seismic strengthening, structural repair and improvement and enhancement of the viaduct's safety conditions.

At ULMA, we understand the importance of guaranteeing the integrity and durability of bridges, fundamental piers in transport infrastructure. With the same precision and dedication that we apply in construction, we also offer restoration, repair and maintenance processes, providing customised solutions for each situation.

The solutions offered by ULMA made it possible to create safe working platforms and accesses for the execution of the Duarte Pacheco Viaduct reinforcement and restoration works. These solutions made the works possible without affecting the normal flow of rail, road and pedestrian traffic on this busy road.

Our wide range of products, designed to be fully compatible with each other, has allowed us to design two protection gantries on the tracks, with shoring towers, BRIO beams, profiles and ENKOFORM formwork. These gantries have ensured safe working conditions over the tracks.

BRIO scaffolding solutions, both cantilevered and suspended on the deck and arches, created safe working platforms in all areas of the viaduct, including decks, arches, piers and abutments. This strategy optimised the amount of scaffolding required and reduced potential restrictions to the access and surroundings of the jobsite.

The scaffolding for the piers and abutments was supported directly on the ground and adapted to the different geometries and specific requirements of the project. This ensured that workers had access to all parts of the jobsite.

These innovative solutions made it possible to carry out the restoration and reinforcement works on the viaduct with minimal disruption to traffic on this important approach road, demonstrating ULMA's ability to offer systems that combine safety, functionality and cost-effectiveness.

Our experience and technical expertise allow us to contribute to extending the lifespan and functionality of these critical infrastructures, reaffirming our commitment to excellence and progress in the construction field.
