Gioia 20, a new iconic complex facing Gae Aulenti square in Milan

Oct 17, 2024
Facing Milan's picturesque Piazza Gae Aulenti is an impressive architectural ensemble consisting of two characteristic towers.

This project consists of two office towers: the East Tower and the West Tower. The east tower, which is approximately 98 metres high, consists of 23 floors above ground and 4 underground floors. The smaller 64-metre west tower has 14 floors above ground and 3 underground floors. Together, these two buildings form the ‘Portali di Melchiore Gioia’, an iconic entrance to Milan's fashionable Porta Nuova district.

ULMA Solution

A wide range of equipment has been used in this complex and ambitious project: CC-4 aluminium formwork for the floor slabs, ORMA modular formwork for the walls, CRL circular formwork for the columns and various shoring systems. ATR self-climbing formwork was used in the building cores. The safety of the workers during work inside the structure was ensured by the installation of HWS perimeter protection screens.

The undertaking of this project had certain challenges considering the urban environment and the reduced area for a building of this magnitude. The logistics were particularly complex and required careful and coordinated planning for the protective screens, which were transported pre-assembled from another location and assembled off-site. The versatility of the equipment used has made it possible to make modifications during the construction process in order to increase safety as much as possible.

ULMA played a crucial role by demonstrating great efficiency and logistical capacity. The synergy and close collaboration between the technical department and the customer has been fundamental in carrying out the project, guaranteeing coordination between the design of innovative solutions, assistance and jobsite safety.

From a sustainability point of view, ULMA has contributed to obtaining LEED and BREEAM certification as both the steel and wood parts of the structures used are made from recycled materials.
