Atlantic Station, Stamford, CT

A mixed-use development, where ULMA provides the slab formwork
Atlantic Station is a mixed-use development which converted the historic U.S. Post Office on Atlantic Street in Stamford, CT into a retail center with two high-rise apartment complexes.

Description

Atlantic Station is a mixed-use development which converted the historic U.S. Post Office on Atlantic Street in Stamford, CT into a retail center with two high-rise apartment complexes. The “north tower” will have 21 floors, and the “south tower” 29 floors, housing a total of 650 residential units and parking for more than 800 cars with spectacular views of Long Island Sound and Manhattan. At the base of the towers and in the converted former post office, there is 40,600 square feet of retail including a specialty market, coffee shop, shoe repair business and dry cleaners which will turn the area into a shopping center. Atlantic Station is conveniently located within walking distance of the Stamford Transportation Center and is by Interstate-95. Expected completion for the project will be the first quarter of 2018.

ULMA Solution

ULMA proposed the use of FORMADECK, a post, joist and drop head shoring system designed to maximize labor productivity and efficiency through the use of 8’ x 8’ and 8’ X 6’ grid patterns.

FORMADECK reduces formwork cycle time due to the early retrieval of its main components (girders, grid joist and joists) which can be moved to the next shoring location for faster cycle times. FORMADECK’s Drop Head lowers the decking components 4 inches for fast and easy removal while the posts remain for reshoring.

Due to the project layout, these were the main considerations for selecting FORMADECK:

    • Increased productivity and efficiency due to the regular grid system, flat plate with long runs and limited number of drop beams.
    • Large areas where the slab geometry and column separation is regular.
    • Fast shoring cycle times.
    • Safety and overall ease of use as system is install from the ground with simple light-weight components.

ULMA supplied approximately 57,000 square feet of shoring equipment for the construction of the north tower and parking garage which included, the FORMADECK system with ALUPROP aluminum post shores, and the ENKOFLEX system using aluminum stringers and wood joists.

Other ULMA systems used on this project include MEGALITE, our handset panel modular wall and column formwork system, and ULMA’s KSP platform system used for formwork support in elevator and staircase shafts, hollow piers or other types of cavities where formwork support is necessary.
